    Snow in the USA

Just searched for HM Sentinel online but reckon I found a successor vessel. The one I found didn't have sails.

    Brave to braze?

Now you mention it.. there are corresponding twin indentations on either side of the pan. Something with jaws has been been used. Inside the tube I can't see anything, no apparent holes. Chinese crimping system possibly. Or maybe connection for some power to heat/glue a compound.

    Brave to braze?

The wires are all inside the rod. Slightly like a diesel engine glow plug. I was a bit surprised to discover that when it finally came right off. Maybe self tappers is the safer option, I'd have to adapt my wooden pan holding jig/board to make room for them. It's great being retired to have...

    Brave to braze?

Anyone tried brazing a sublimator alloy "spoon" back onto the steel heat tip? The mapp gas flame is about 3000 degrees. Hmmmm. Or shall I be the guinea pig!

    Bring out your dead..

Temp up to 12 degrees today after the severely cold period. Dead being dumped out. Anyone else seeing this?

What did you do in the Apiary today?

why do you think there'll be a lot of fondant feeding? Interested as I've been a bit surprised by the lower weights than I expected recently.

What did you do in the Apiary today?

There's a good article from David Evans on the subject here.. Broodless? - The Apiarist

What to do with brood frames of stores?

Thanks all, I washed them in the kitchen sink. Repeated filling with flowing warm water and shake out. Quite satisfying really. Certainly beat getting the extractor out again. They're now in a warm place drying out.

What to do with brood frames of stores?

Is it possible to wash out the nectar?

What to do with brood frames of stores?

Thanks Hemo. I hadn't thought of extracting the uncapped portion. I do have a cage/frame for my extractor that will take brood frames.

What to do with brood frames of stores?

During the summer I removed some brood frames that were filled with stores, replacing them with foundation. Partly as swarm prevention, partly to increase brood nest size. I'd intended to feed these stores back in the autumn but having left a super on each hive I've been struggling to get them...

Will a smallish colony still expand at this time of year?

good idea to paint it, left as is small birds (****?) pecked holes in mine leaving them a bit scruffy.

Drawn brood combs with stores in them

I have a number of drawn brood frames with partially capped honey and some also with pollen. Assuming no chest freezer space what should I do with them? I have more than enough for making up nucs. They're not worth extracting but were they to be cleaned out by bees perhaps they'd be of use next...

    Re-combining after a split

    Pagden-ish?

Thanks. Putting Hivemaker's trick aside for a moment, were you to be intending to keep the old Q that had been nuc'd, would you still wait until the new Q in the parent colony was laying before doing a re-unite?

    Pagden-ish?

How long do you wait before re uniting?

    Nosema?

Thanks very much indeed. I'll check those frames. Really appreciated.

    Nosema?

This mating nuc was filled with a cupful of bees plus a QC welded to some foundation on 26th, 48 hours ago. Fondant lump in there too. 24 hours after taking it from it's 24 hours of dark purdah in a shed it looks in a bad state. (Pic attached) Does this look like nosema? I know it needs a...
