    Dog Poos ..

Ooh la la! I think you need to get out more understanding_bees. Yes, you can spin the water in the other direction but the Coriolis Force will always tend to slow and then reverse it. Try it yourself before “going off on one” 😉 And yes the effect is reversed as soon as you are the other side of...

    Dog Poos ..

We need someone who lives on the equator (or at least within the tropics). There the Coriolanus Force should change direction between northern summer and southern summer. Does this have a corresponding effect on dog poo? If so then what happens at the equinox? 🙂🙃

    Dog Poos ..

Easier still is to watch which way water spins as it goes down the plughole.

    Hives light

Likewise, I did try putting the vaporiser in through the front but that resulted in a lot of toasted bees thrown out onto a pile in front of the hive next morning 😢

    High mite count

Thanks for all the discussion of your experiences. It does seem fairly convincing. One thing on bee colour. You can get a big variation in a hive. This is, I presume, partly because the queen has sperm from multiple drones each with their own colour traits.

    Chinese Vapeaway

Not sure it’s a copy at all. Perhaps it’s exactly the same product made in the same factory. Just that one of them is marketed at a vastly inflated price by Varrox. Or am I being too cynical 😉

    High mite count

Hi Adfermo, I took your advice and asked my bee’s. It took a while to get a reply but finally they said: “Buzz Off!” 🙂

    High mite count

Yes, I can understand for drones. I can also understand that a hive might want to accept workers from another hive. What’s missing is a logical reason for a worker from one hive taking up residence in (i.e. not just robbing from) another. With evolution things just don’t happen unless there’s a...

    High mite count

I am puzzled by this “bee’s joining neighbours”. Are there studies that show this happening? It doesn’t seem to make any sense genetically! If I am a worker bee I can see it makes sense for me to work hard for my hive. After all, assuming the big bad beekeeper hasn’t re-queened, I share many...

    New and unknowledgeable

I just checked my inspection board and apart from the varoa expected from my OA treatment found four bee heads and multiple bee legs. It’s only 24 hours since I last looked at the board. What’s the likely reason for this and should I be worried?

    Which type of bees?

Sorry Apple I may have misquoted you as I now can’t find your use of the word “improving”

    Which type of bees?

Perhaps when the expression “improving bees” is used (as Apple does above) the “improving” should be put in quotes. It seems to me that improving one aspect of bees (e.g. honey production) is often detrimental in other ways (e.g. aggression, ability to fly in colder conditions). So one...

    New and unknowledgeable

Can someone confirm how we know heavily infested hives pass mites to other hives? I.e are there studies that show this happening. This gets talked about a lot on the forum but how do we know it is not just an increase in numbers already in the hive (even if we are treating the hive)

    Oxalic Vaporiser

Thanks for all your helpful answers. I have been removing the inspection board and using OAV from under the OMF with a plywood sheet below (so as not to lose the vapour downwards) since my original post and so far no more toasted bee's. I do have a concern about how much actually gets into the...

Varroa feed on bees’ fat bodies

Thanks Erichalfbee. I learned so much about Varroa from this video. In my opinion this is a must watch for everyone interested in Varroa i.e. all beekeepers.

    Oxalic Vaporiser

Can someone explain how to avoid toasting bees during OAV. I used, what seems to be, the normal method of putting the vapouriser through the entrance and after treatment there were many toasted dead bees (fortunately not the queen) jettisoned from the hive.
