    Harvest

It's truly amazing what our little insects can accomplish, but boy do I loath this time of year, I hate extracting honey with a passion only surpassed by the Heather cropping 🤣.

    Table saw etc recommendations

We have just taken on another building next to ours which will give loads of extra room for building more of our own kit. This winter will be taken up with making crown/flight boards, commercial supers and dummy boards as we have another 100 complete empty hives to fill. Reccomdations for a band...

    Butyric rodents

We never had trouble with rats until the landlord rented out the shed adjacent to ours for horses. Last winter we went through 10 kg of bait & that's with the supers stored elsewhere. I got a mate who is a pest controller to have a look and he sprayed the foam bait around the main shed & I...

    Apiary tool box

Above is pretty much what each of our vehicles carries, apart from the chainsaw & tent. When on a pollination run we sleep in the truck, it's quite surprising how comfy a Sprinter cab can be, One across the seats & I'm usually on the floor in a sleeping bag.

    honey price update

There's a guy local to us selling a pound for a fiver, plus plenty selling 12 oz for the same, utter madness IMHO and definitely we would not survive at that price point.

    Equipment Wanted Employment opportunity

Due to further expansion within Shropshire we have a vacancy for a full time beekeeper to join our small team of four. The role will encompass most areas of the business but will be mainly focused on the upkeep our production colonies. Enthusiasm beats length of experience as full training...

    Apivar and OA vaping

I feel we/ourselves have been relying on Amitraz for too long now, since it became available as its use is so easy. Dose can be split for nucs which is very cost effective, my SBI says not for Apistan but two strips is too much for a nuc. My winter losses are creeping up, but only by the odd...

    cut comb storage

I would àdd just be aware that if you store whole frames for cutting you have to be extremely careful, they crack easily, don't know why, but they do. I've just two boxes left to cut from a stack of twenty Last years frames that have been a real PITA this week.

Advice on colony increase in late August/Sept

This doesn't really help you with the current situation, but is something to look at for further seasons. When I find a DL colony I remove to about twenty feet from original position, then put a Q+ nuc in its place, throw out the old colony after a quick blast of air freshener and usually when...

    Whoops!!

Not had a single one this year 🤞, basket spinner makes a massive difference. Put the frame back in as it is and they will draw that out lovely. A lot of our cut comb frames go back in and there is usually no issues with missing sections being drawn out again, usually the following year.

    Special offer Posca pen set.

We use purple & pink for a third year Queen, white & yellow for first year. Unless it's quite special we don't take queens into a third winter.

    Van hire for heather

We use a pickup with taillift hired from Days rental, have to specify a towbar & use our own insurance as towing a trailer. Have done it this way for the last four years on Borage, not sure I would take someone else's vehicle onto the moors IMHO though. As an aside, for next year we have...

    full length leather gauntlets ?

Don’t bother, use nitrile your experience with the bees will be so much better. If you do have a stroppy colony just double glove. I use orange Nitrile from my local NAPA parts store with gaiters ive had for years over my wrists, or for something a little thicker the ones Gruff sells are...

    National deep tangential adaptor?

I'd rather have it in the barrel than take the chance. I suppose it will be the same as taking full boxes away from big colonies before a flow ends & replacing with empty's, they sure work hard to replace what is lost. This is first year with baskets and the biggest difference is very little...

    Cleaning extraction equipment

Murray told me a few years ago that the best investment is bees, shiny metal is only there to show off and doesn't earn anything. It is only In the Last few years we've been able to purchase some items brand new and it's only Lyson coming into the UK that made that possible.

    Cleaning extraction equipment

I'm very fortunate with Wendy as there's a couple of pounds of wax attached to the ceiling, windows & blinds in the conservatory, I'm only reminded about that episode once a month now 😳.

    Cleaning extraction equipment

It certainly didn't help 🤣, but I'm content with the choice I made of which to keep 😉.

    National deep tangential adaptor?

My recommendation for a spinner would be buy a swing cage over a radial, even if its second hand. Our box average on Borage is up by 2 lb because the frames are coming out 100% clean and we've not had a single blow out yet. That's using the same box, frame & foundation as last year.

    Cleaning extraction equipment

Between crops for us as extracting tends to merge from beans to Blossom to lime etc. Massive deep clean done in the winter. I hate the job with a passion, wish I could find someone happy to spend their time extracting, even the apprentice loathes the job. When we dropped the numbers during my...

    Using Queen Cells for Nucs

I was passing on knowledge I have gained from my experience. When I started I only had 3-4 hives and was a newbie, this technique has worked for me but other uncontrollable factors must be taken into account as well. Just because I run more hives than most on here doesn't mean that I have...
