I found it fascinating the person the hive belonged to was all for getting his blow torch and was convinced they would cause harm to the bees, but I took the stand its nature and all they are doing is taking advantage of the heat from the bees. Fascinating that they moved the eggs to the area on the crown board that was the right temperature for them. They were there for a good few inspections, I would give them a few mins to move what they could and then remove the crown board put it safe and level so as not to disturb the eggs and remaining ants then inspected and after the ants obviously moved back in. The nest must have matured because every last one of them had gone on the last inspection.
 
Good on you Tom; far too many of us just squish anything that isn't Apis mellifera, without even pausing to check if it poses a threat of any sort - let alone a serious threat...
