This might be a silly question, but I've noticed quite a few drones going and returning to hive, what do they get up to?

They'll be thinking of sex every two minutes.

Only thinking!

Once would be more than enough for them!

I remember my grandfather taking me to one side during his 90th birthday and whispered into my ear:
" you know that bromide stuff they say the army put into the tea during the war to cool down soldiers' sexual appetite? well, I can tell you it's true and it works - mine's just kicked in now!"

For the benefit of the OP drones congregate in given areas in each locality . They read the topography and ride the thermals , virgin Queens using the same criteria , head for these drone congregations in order to mate with max variation of said drones .

Could be an aerodrome as hangar roofs generate thermals given the right conditions :D

with the low quality i have this year with my mated queens, i think it is the back of the bike shed
Not sure of quality yet, but I've had a better percentage mated this year than the previous two years.

"what do they get up to?"

drones have only one purpose.

those that return have, so far, failed.

of course they are not to know what successfully achieving that purpose means for them!

DOI: an evolutionary failure myself. Happily accept that my existence has no purpose.
