What is this??

This 'thing' flew into my FinL's living room. It was black and white, 3/4" long, and held his tail a bit like a wasp; it's white stripe went across his body and across his wings too...I wondered if it's a type of hover fly?

Yes,looking at those eyes definitely a fly

Same things hang around on my landing boards - the bees don't seem to mind them.

Better picture Freefall! I used flash and it changed the colouring...and thanks for finding it - I gave up - there were so many flies!!
