One of my hives has dumped relatively large flakes of wax on the alighting board - they seep too large to be cappings. Any ideas what this is?

I doubt it's mice - the guard is still on. I suppose it could be robbing, but they seem to be very occupied with the gorse - they all seemed to be loaded down with pollen today. Here are a couple of pics to illustrate:

Have you opened and inspected this hive yet? It could well be that when making manipulations, you broke off winter brace comb and the bees are just doing some housework clearing it out of the way.

There is a load of brace comb on top and I suppose I could have damaged it when giving fondant. Probably the most likely, although that was 2 weeks ago.

Interesting this as i observed the very same thing today in entrance to one of my hives.
Does any one have useful suggestions. Not planning on first inspection till next weekend.
All bees are busy bringing in pollen,
