"I have apiguard on at the moment so can't reduce the entrance"
when using apiguard you actually want to reduce ventilation of the hive as much as possible - that includes reduced entrance.
if on solid floor with inspection board slid in from the front you can still apply a strip of gaffer/duck tape across most of the entrance, or a strip of foam. just remove each time you change the apiguard, check the tray then replace.
