We turned the frames to be 'warm' for the winter, if and/or when should we turn them back?

Thanks, i thought someone had said that in the Autumn but then wondered if i'd dreamed it, my head is buzzing with things i've read and what i should or shouldn't be doing

The combs were only ever 'cold-' or 'warm-' way relative to the entrance. With the advent of OMFs (which are often left fully open), the technique/procedure of changing comb direction became pretty-much irrelevant.

You can read anything about bees and come across lots of conflicting argument. Most of it is pure imagination on somebody's part. I find warm way is convenient for inspections while standing behind the hive but if my apiary was laid out differently so standing at the side was more convenient then cold way would be useful. As for the bees - they don't give a damn. Who would turn the comb in a feral hive?

personaly i think the best way is which ever way for ease of access when you open for where you can stand

The biggest concern I have is that your bees would have been over the moon to have to reorganise the entire hive. It doesn't matter how the comb is arranged but it certainly matters if you alter this late in the season. Bees arrange their stores above and behind the brood, moving it just put their stores to one side.
Sometimes I think it's a shame nationals are square.

This is why I am asking the question - they will be staying as they are.
Thanks for the feedback

Why? makes no difference whichever way, especially with OMF - it's just a figure of speech really.

As Swarm says - doing it in autumn will be a lot of disruption for the bees as they would have rearranged their stores and brood nest for the winter.
