So I know it's time to start closing hives for winter..

Weather is windy and wet here...and will continue to be windy and wet...still warm...we might get a dry spell in a couple of weeks..

I'm concerned about my 5 frame swarm nuc...mdf but painted. .

Would it be madness to consider transferring them to a polynuc or is there a rain jacket I can put on it????

Swarm never built up enough to transfer earlier and then weather caught me out..

Hmmmmm. I might not risk a disaster with the queen at this time of year
I would make them a Celotex/Kingspan jacket. Cover the whole hive except entrance of course leaving as little gap all the way round as you can get away with. Put it on top of a similar thickness of the same stuff, strap up and hey presto. Sort in spring

And pray tell how do I do that??..

I have kingspan and quite enjoy cutting it...what do I seal the ends with or stick it to the hive with?

Don't want my cello tape getting wet and dropping off..lol...

Ooh...I like the video jafer!..I'll have a go...cheers!!

Cheers everyone...more cutting and sticking..

I didn't realise how much blue petering beekeeping would involve!!

Depends on how much DIY you want to do. Lots of ready to use kit available.
There is a bit of a division line between those who "roll their own" and those who are DIY incompetent.
You just need to figure out which side of the line you stand on,.

Cosy made of 50mm+ PIR hold together with solvent based grab glue and bamboo BBQ sticks. seal all joins inside and outside.
Ally tape works. No openings above the entrance.
