I have a mix of hoffman and straight sided frames, and im not sure which is better for honey supers. i like the straight side as easier to uncap but like the hoffman for spacing.

what do other people go for?

straight sided

As in SNI not Manley?

Self spacing frames are good for self spacing; other than that they are an expensive luxury.

I use SNI's and (eventually) space them wider at as few as 9 frames per super (uses fewer frames and fewer to extract). Not ideal for some, but suits me.

Dependent on how you uncap as well. A hot air gun doesn't really care whether they are one or the other.

Hoffman should be the choice for shallow brood frames (for the half of brood-and-a-half, for example). Brood frames would be at constant spacing, and as easy as possible to remove for inspection. So Hoffmans on rails, not castellations, for that job.

But for honey-crop frames, I don't see their advantage.

in use 10 x SN1's frames with castelations, just one packet of foundation fills the box, some go for 9 frames per box. you choose.

I've been told that castellations x 10 are good, as this is the widest at which you can put foundation without them drawing brace comb, which they would in x 9. Have other people found this?

10 or 11 sn1's, with a Q excluder you are not going to roll or squish anything important, so why use anything more elaborate?

Um, no...start at 11...two down into next box, space to 9.

That is correct Skyhook, same spacing as if you were using Manleys, and the only spacing i use in all of my supers, comb is drawn straight from foundation with this spacing, no problems at all.

That's what I've been doing so far on spacers- the question was referring to foundation in castellations, ie without re-spacing once drawn.

Sorry to disagree, but the emphasis was simply that one pack of foundation was adequate for one super, nothing to do with the semantics of arriving at the finished article.

Thanks HM.
