I put the queen excluder and super on the hive yesterday full with 10 frames of foundation. Ive had a peek today just to see how things are moving and check if all is ok. 24 hours later and the super is completely empty apart from 3 bees that to be honest could of got in while I was putting the super on. Am I jumping the gun thinking I may have been given a travelling screen and not a queen excluder? or is this normal behaviour for the bees and its me just being impatient?

You could remove the queen excluder, wait for the bees to start drawing the frames and then put it back. But first of all what have you got in your brood box(es)? Have you got nectar coming in? Any frames not fully drawn in the brood box, still space for honey to be stored in your brood box (on the edges around the brood nest per example)? Are your bees covering all the frames?....

Cheers......sounds like me being impatient :hairpull: , just thought a few more might have travelled up, ill leave alone and see how it goes!

Returning to the important question how many frames of brood are there in the BB?

I had a colony last year that was ram packed full of bees in the brood box so I put a super on with a QE and they just refused to use it even to the extent that they were clustered on the entrance at night rather than go into the super. So I removed the QE and gave a couple of super frames a light misting of 1:1 syrup and they were straight into it the next day. As soon as the first frame was starting to be drawn I put the QE back on and all was well.

Cheers, Mick.

Super on 7/8 full frames of brood. Have you got that?

If you kept the local bees in my area you would sell all your supers and queen excluders. 5/6 frames of brood was their limit.....apart from one.....whom I bred from and whose daughters promptly reverted to type.
