If thick snow, may I recommend you put some shade over the entrance to stop bees coming out if the sun shines brightly. The bright reflection will tempt them out and the cold will drop them into the snow..

I wondered this but then thought , maybe just leave the snow alone so it blocks the entrance , must work in nature .

If the snow is not deep enough to cover the entrance then they need blocking to stop the foragers being tempted by the brightness to fly.

If they do the light being reflected off the snow confuses them, they land chill and die.

If I tried to go out and shade all my hives after snow - it is I who would be found frozen in some snowdrift.
another plus in the favour of underfloor entrances - the glare doesn't shine directly into the hive.
