Does anyone know what the specific gravity should be if using a medical/veterinary refractometer? One source says 19% is 1.4101, 18% 1.4171 etc. just because I have one at work I could use for free?

Is it one you can carry in your pocket while manipulating supers?

That's the new version of the 'short' one ... (calibration by knobs, no screwdriver needed now).
This is the 'long' one ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-...893?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item35e035dc5d

I have the older version of the short one. Its perfectly OK, but the single example of the long one that I've seen through did seem a little sharper.

Don't rush to calibrate. Check the reading you get with proper Liquid Paraffin BP and see whether it needs adjustment before changing anything.

It is, yes. It's very similar to the ones I've had a look at on eBay (but maybe about 7" long), just different units, and we have two so borrowing one for a weekend wouldn't be an issue.

(Edit for spelling)

I'm going to take it that you knew that you really meant refractive index ... :)

thanks to all.

I've ordered an original long version, as it came with free 10 pipettes.
