Inspection - plenty of stores, presence of eggs, good brood pattern, more than enough room, no disease visible. Queen visible (not clipped).

Start of a queen cup however. Facing down, not that big, built on face of comb (where comb slightly indented), no egg/larvae inside. Won't be able to check again for 9 days (holidays), so just wondered what action , if any, is needed?

All looks good, so just wondered why they might be planning to swarm?

None needed you have it all covered as a beek. However, there is no guarantees in this game. Just have a good holiday.

In the immortal words of Corporal Jones...

..."Don't panic!"

I am still a beginner but had similar and worse frights from queen cells appearing earlier this season. In the end the girls sorted themselves out, but I can recommend dowloading, printing off, reading, and keeping with you for future reference Wally Shaw's advice:

Queen cups that are not charged with eggs or jelly are nothing to worry about. You may get quite a few in a hive that are never used but of course they are the start of queen cells so always check them in case they become more than cups.

I have one very strong colony that makes cups all the time, but never any sign of them using them. I usually break them down to make sure all the same. The other colonies rarely make them so I guess it's down to different habits. The lot that make them I've just come to expect a new lot every inspection.
