Hi
Any evidence that putting an empty super below an existing filled one is more productive or does it make no difference ?

thanks

Buzzo.

My musing would be that bees fill their nest from the top down with stores. You gave them a top with one super so if you add another above you are moving the goal posts and that is less than natural. They would keep building comb down to fill with stores hence the reason I add the super below the existing one. Is it more beneficial? I have no idea but it works for me!

Earlier in season, when it is cooler, or now if they are desperate for space I under super, otherwise just bung it on top. I think I have read a learned paper somewhere that it makes little difference. Probably my foibles just make me happier

Foundation is drawn faster with the heat if the brood I find.
Drawn supers go on top to save me taking heavy ( hopefully) supers off to check the one at the bottom.

All my drawn supers are on now .. made up another 10 frames today to put a super on my 'new' colony .. borrowed a couple of beautifully drawn and capped frames from another hive to give them some direction with the rest of the foundationless frames. Should have taken a photo of the frames I swapped - they were showstoppers .. next time I open them up perhaps if I remember.

I think this year I am going to have super envy

Using drawn foundation it appears to make no difference.
Using undrawn, then as above..

It helps if we have decent weather.. (it's raining here - again)
