Been up to the bees and the farmer has put electric fence round my hives and the field, so anybody getting in will get a shock as it is 3 wires and 3ft 6ins high so they cant get under or over without getting hit, this is until the sheep have finished grazing,

Thats okay then, in which case i agree, we cannot expect them to be doing anything else, so not really worth even reporting a crime, unless its to do with motoring.

This also reinforces my belief that you need to sort this scum out in your own way.

In a way you are right. The boys in blue have performance targets, and have to achieve detection rates. A 'no hope of finding the culprit' case is the exact opposite of what they want to find.

In the last few weeks I have been engaging in a long and convoluted discussion with a person on ebay selling a queen cell incubator. We KNOW it to have been obtained through credit card fraud from a friend. This person is selling a huge range of high ticket items, all new and in original unopened packaging. The idea is to eventually get them to agree to meet in person to sell us the goods for cash, just that it would be a sting with police involved.

The original vendor knows exactly which incubator it is, bought with a stolen credit card early summer. Stated to be in Stranraer, yet the vendor knows nothing about the place, and a search shows him in Twickenham, exactly where the goods were sent by the supplier before the money was clawed back from them by the credit card company weeks later. Its the only one EVER shipped to the UK, and they have called round all the other buyers of that model and they have not sold theirs. So they KNOW.

Police NOT interested. Not even slightly. All you get is 'there is nothing we can do'................even to requests from the police at origin, and letters to the local top police officer have not even generated a reply. Ebay not interested either.

I'm sorry I feel this way, but the scum referred to are not just the criminals. Its also the lazy empire builders in uniforms that I have a sometimes low opinion of. Always wanting more money, more officers, more cars. Invent ever more easily stingable petty offences. Safety cameras??? If that were true then fine, but its not. I was at a speech on police work by a chief constable up here, and he specifically mentioned the revenue raising potential of well positioned speed cameras and how much per month they could raise. Its an excuse for a tax, at least in part. Off rant.

Much of my spleen against traffic officers in particular stems from a case maybe three or four years back when our local Chinese take away was invaded by a gang of hoodies demanding free food and the money in the till or they were going to cut the face of the couples kid with a stanley knife. One of the couple escaped and called the police. 'No units available to attend' .........I inadvertantly arrived on the scene a few minutes later as the hoodies fled.and not 300 mtres away there had been a unit of traffic cops doing speed trapping as I came in to town, and beside them was a police van, with two cops sitting in the front, one for sure snoring it up and the other reading the paper. They were local officers, not traffic, and I could name them.

So, I call the police myself as the aftermath of this incident was chaos, although at least they had not cut the kid. 'No units available to attend'. Turns out traffic officers 'only do traffic', and the other lot were 'on their break'. I DID report that there were officers only 300 metres away at the time of the incident, and was told they had put a call out to all units, and none had responded as available. Over the next three weeks I was followed several times by police cars, stopped for breath tests four times, and pulled for producing my documents at the local police station five times. Nice eh?

It took the police 20 hours from first call to arriving at the take away to investigate. They stayed 10 minutes, asked very little about the hoodies, but a lot about the Chinese couple themselves, took no prints even though the couple showed them a large knife one of the gang had handled, and nothing more was ever heard. Complete waste of time.

This would have been an easy one compared to hive theft.

We even gave them the name of a known bee and hive thief who has a lot of 'previous' on this, and had moved from his old area to only a mile or two from where our theft happened. They never called on him or asked to see his bees or the inside of his shed.............just nothing. Very very frustrating. The bee inspectors were much more helpful, but for sure he did not show them everything, and of course it would be a really stupid thief that took inspectors to see hives that you had stolen. It conveyed a message though, that he was under scrutiny. Nothing has been stolen in that area since.

ITLD........who has more time for bee inspectors than police inspectors.

I totally agree that the police are largely self serving pension seekers that seem to spend far more time on courses than doing meeningfull work, however, I would add I wouldn't want to do their job, traffic cop an easy job ?! dealing with RTA's regularly must be horrific.

Policing hive theft is certainly a job the local beekeeping community should shoulder, rather than expecting the largely disinterested plod to do anything.

ITLD, with that amount of unwarranted attention it would be very easy to prove harassment if you have kept receipts for every pull, take them in to your local police station and huff indignantly and you have yourself a free pass for drink driving, no pulls whatsoever, all you have to do is avoid any prangs. Every cloud and all that ;)
