Hello my friends,im new is well and same questions.
ordered 2 overwintered nucs ,1 from https://localhoneyman.co.uk/product/honeybees-for-sale-british-national-nuc/
and another from https://www.honeyfieldsbeefarm.co.uk/product/5-frame-nucleus-with-over-wintered-buckfast-queen/
and now start wondering about that like above said Eyeman and SDM
overwintered nucs late april/may its very late, thats nearly 3/4season gone,
my misreake ,i think those sellers make seasoning nucleus just after biggest part of harvest done by bees not over winter,do im right???
how to recognize winter nuc and seasonal nuc?
its really sense to order overwintered if you get seasonal?
i will pickup my own those nucs and if somebody help me with recognise,i can honestly talk with seller and negotiating reall price.
of course with discretionary

The only bit of advice i could give from my experience of collecting my Nuc last year, and from what i have read, when you collect the Nuc make sure it has a travel lid (mesh screen) for ventilation as the bees will buzz and generate a lot of heat while they are travelling in a car for more than 30 mins, and if they are not ventilated properly they will overheat and some will die. T
here is advice that you can occasionally spray them with a very fine water mist through the travel screen to help calm them and keep them cool. but not tried it.

As for moving them from the Nuc to the full hive, we got our bees home in the evening and kept the hive closed until 5:30am the next morning, left the nuc where the hive would be eventually for the day. then in the afternoon moved the Nuc to one side, put the main Hive in its place and transferred the frames, put one new frame of foundation in for them to build and then put a dummy board in so they didn't have to larger space to keep the right temp, put a miller feeder on with about 5ltrs of 1:1 syrup and then left them to it for a week.

they have survived the winter and are already building up well.

Probably more to do with metal spacers than self spacing frames but the thought is less slapping together of frames.....that’s the thought anyway

Ah ok .. so if we have them all with plastic spacers on the frames but will make a note to try and get them in direction of travel ... especially with my hard breaking in the van !!

Can I ask why its necessary to line the frames in the direction of travel ?

We took some hives in my van the other year and didnt make that distinction but keen to know what risks we took

not that much of an issue - especially with Hoffman frames, but think of sudden braking etc.

You have ordered nucs from 2 suppliers for delivery in late April or May. Now you are complaining about the timing and mentioning negotiating a price. Nice try but I think any sensible supplier would refuse and find another customer.

I think a sensible supplier would tell you to “@!?(((?( and would probably have to beat 10 other customers off with a big stick, also not sure how you figure those dates are late in season but there you go ......you know what you are getting and thats a nuc and over wintered queen. Even if the supplier has split the colony or even drawn a few frames off thats his buisness and as you are only buying a nuc thats what you should expect

Picking up an overwintered nuc in April/May is more than reasonable.
Any reputable bee breeder/supplier wil wait until they are sure the queen is laying well and colony is viable and built up to a reasonable strength before selling it.

Comb slap when braking

Comb slap when braking

The thing is frames will be stuck together...even if recently inspected brace come from frame to frame will meet each other when put back into the Nuc/hive the way it came out..that will stop any movement that could splat the Queen..regardless i still move bees around with the frames pointing front to back..
