If you buy an overwintered one in the spring you will get a honey crop in your first year.

If you wait till they are available with the current year queens in May June then your crop is less likely. Former is more expensive as there are fewer of them. You pays your money and takes your choice :)

Just out of interest - what time of year is best to purchase a Nuc?

Spring is a good time for over-wintered nucs but these will build quickly into full productive colonies this year. If you are a newbie (still taking a beginners course), I would suggest you order a nuc to be made during the summer (with this years queen) so that it doesn't get too strong for you to cope with this year.
