That is a miserable habit. Let the hives be in peace .
If it is dead, it is dead. It does not wake up with listening.

Finman... dont mind him.

Luckily.... no one here has the answers to all

" Miserable " is not paying for a round of drinks !

Putting your ear to the hive works .. So give it a go :) and ignore the " miserable " comment

Might as well wait until spring any way. They may be alive now, but die out in early spring

don't knock experience and along time beekeeper possible more experience than a lot on here , and plain speaking not point scoring against others ,

Do you think commercial beekeepers put their ear up to each and everyone of their possibly 1000s of hives midwinter? No. Because there is not a damn think they could do for the bees either way. They just make sure they prepare them for the winter thoroughly in Autumn and deal with any collateral in Spring.

Putting my ear to the hive is a pleasure that I am not giving up. It is so therapeutic and reassuring to this beek. We have commercial beeks on here that re-queen and unite colonies mid winter, because they have the resources and the knowledge to do so.

That I cannot believe. No one sell new queens in midwinter. Why to keep new queens in a nuc and then change them in mid winter. Soap.

Who do you have in mind, Beeno - and where do they get these winter queens from?

Plenty of experience here , more so than any other source I have encountered. In fact after year 1 with four colonies, flying solo, without the help of JB, Itma and many others generously giving of their time and experience I would have been goosed !

Though Yeogi does not mean you must bow and worship even if you disagree, or feel a reply is ridiculous. Re read the post and replies , some lets just say, a little strange.

Still think if in doubt , couple of taps on the hive wall, cluster will emit an audible hum, no bees flying, close to zero disturbance and the beekeeper can be happy at that given moment the colony is alive. Just recounting in my limited experience what I have learnt, As to how viable is another days work .
