gents... have checked my hive and theres plenty of activity by the entrance. for me is what is next. i havent put any protection in against varroa, what is the best method to use?? should i put in new frames next to the queens for them to expand?? any other suggestions for me to do. Sean

Leave them alone .. continue watching at the hive entrance .. still too early to be messing about with them - particularly as far north as you are. Patience in beekeeping is what helps your bees most ..
 
We need more information. Are you saying you didn't treat for varroa last autumn? Has the colony enough food? More will be revealed when you look into the box for your first inspection. Not till it's warm enough though.
 
Are you a member of your local Assoc? If so ask them as you are on the west and I am not familiar with the conditions there.
