Newspaper or not

Morning.
When combining a HQL colony with a QR colony, is the tried and tested newspaper method ‘needed’?
A colleague uses a ‘bit of Fabreze’ in each box then combines without newspaper. I assume the spray disrupts the pheromones/ causes confusion whilst they mix.
Any thoughts?

Your choice really. Squirting stuff seems to work and if you are in a hurry then its handy. Newspaper works too.

There are occasions when one is preferable to the other so I use both, but mainly air freshener.

Newspaper if uniting overnight
Air freshener during the day when bees are flying.

Air freshener is quicker , easier and less wasteful of newspaper which if of the tabloid variety is best used as an inferior alternative to toilet paper.
