I need advice on what to do with the bees in and around my house, it seems there are two nests one in my conservatory roof and one in the wall of my house on the oposite side of the house. I really do not want to call an exterminator but im becoming very overwhelmed by the number of bees around the back door of the house as 2 of there 4 entry points are above the back door. Are they harmful, will they feel threatened by me and my children playing in the garden/eating in the garden, please help any info and advice welcome :) xxx

You really need to post this as a question in the main beekeeping forum rather than as a blog. But it sounds like they are masonry bees rather than honey bees. Masonry bees are solitary! I know it appears you have a lot but they are not a social bee like the honey bee and do not live in a large group. They have a small undeveloped sting which might sting you if you accidentally squashed one, they are not aggressive and will not attack either you or your children going about your daily business. They make individual nests within a hole in the wall. There may be 50 bees there all making their own nest. The young will hatch out and in a few weeks they will be gone, but will be back again next year. Enjoy watching them going about their business and don't be frightened.
