have a couple of paynes poly national hives and when I do an inspection ... i remove the supers off the hive and place them on a spare empty super that I take with me

This way the loaded super stack sit nicely and reduces the chance of me crushing bees during the movement off the hive stack to the floor.

When I forget that empty super ... then I sometimes leave them on the upturned poly roof ...

I guess any bits of wood or "runners" could be used ... what do other people do ?

any suggestions .. ?

I just use the roof as you said, I have Paynes and Maisemore Polys so similar roof, all I do is stack diagonally across the upturned roof, minimal contact and almost never squash any bees.

I have designed my hive stand with more than double length so I can put anything on the back as I take it off the hive. Saves bending. But usually I put it on the top of the for I have taken off.

Upturned roof for me, young bees that fall off the comb land in the roof not in the grass and can just be shook back onto the top of the frames.

Upturned roof for me also.

I cover the top of the box with the crownboard.

I'd like to get hold of one of those fold able hotel suitcase racks and save my back a little.
