Hi
I have a quick question about moving hives. I have finally found myself an out apiary but it's only 2 miles from where my hives are now, I have a place I can move them to that is over 3 miles from where they are now and is approximately 6 miles from the new apiary. How long do I need to leave them in the temporary location before they can be safely transfered to the new apiary?

P.s. Does anyone one know what this is?

A few days should be sufficient. However, it is possible to move them directly to their new home as long as you make sure when they come out of the hive they are forced to do an orientation flight.
I would stuff the entrances with dried grass and put lots of twigs/branches on flight board. When the bees eventually come out they will be forced to calculate where they are.

You also need to move them at night. You may also want to place a nuc on the original site to ensure you don't lose any bees

It's a birch sawfly, cimbex femoratus.
