Good weekend everyone.

If I keep the inspection board removed for the winter, is it necessary to have a mouse guard as I can't imagine mice tolerating the airflow?

You don’t want a resident mouse anywhere.
I had one last year who spread chaos by chewing bits off of all my “securely” sealed frames.
This gourmet mouse nibbled his way through bits of all my boxed frames by nibbling his way through the thick polythene taped around the boxes.
This Spring I got a nasty surprise and despite tidbits ranging from cheese to peanut butter Mr Gourmet mouse turned his nose up at the mousetrap offerings.
I had to install a cat as a precaution and quick dispatch of said rodent.

Here was me thinking my stored supers were in the rodent proof version of Fort Knox.
How wrong I was.

If I make a custom mouse guard, what size should I drill the holes into the strip of metal?

Sadly the airflow does not deter them. They just block it off with nesting material, some of which will be made by chewing your frames to pieces.
