I walked down a hospital corridor with my rods and found a line. A loo either side of the corridor and a man-hole cover was enough proof for me!

Failing that, tell a six-year-old it works, then get him or her to dowse for you. They'll almost certainly be able to. (bit like getting a kid to set your DVD recorder, they'll find the skill from somewhere off left field).
