Lost queen by being a pratt

Managed to lose a queen last night.
Opened a nuc and there were a mass of nearly sealed queen cells.
Some new eggs so I had a look for the queen.

I went through the frames twice before I spotted her.
I had a cage in my pocket so I took the frame out and managed to get the queen in.

Had not noticed that the tab was missing and the queen flew out the other end.
I didnt see her go, and looked through the frames to see if she was back.
Went round this morning and couldnt see any queen either, went throught the nuc three times.

At least I have queen cells!
I have split the nuc into two smaller nucs with some queen cell in both.

Ho hum !

Go back in three days and look for eggs! You never know

In my experience it is better to close up the hive as soon as queen flies off, but stay close to that hive for a while after ( you are a landmark which she saw when she left). Continuing to look through the frames will put her off returning. Has worked a few times for me .

Very true, once 1 virgin queen was flying around because she was being kicked out by the queenless nuc I tried to put her in, and she kept landing on me, about 3 times she did that while I was tring to catch her, got her at the end [emoji16]
