In practice anything over a mile should do, though drones can fly vast distances they're very reluctant to cross open bodies of water.

What distance of open water is needed to give pure island matings?

I think both SDM and mbc have a point. The recommended distance is usually 7-8 Km, but this is based on the distance drones can fly over land. That is not the same as the distance they can fly over open water (due to convection currents which can pull them down or winds that can carry them aloft).
They do test this and publish the results (http://www.bienenzucht.de/untersuchungen zur paarungssicherheit.htm)

Got somewhere in mind ?

Yes there's a few islands over here that would be suitable, the only thing is it'd be easier to setup in ii unless a decent sized group could be formed to test the queens

Unless you can be based on the island cor the summer I reckon coming and going would be a real pain in the bum.
