How much wing does a bee need to fly?

The one in the middle pic has to be right on the limit! These others seem rather more air worthy. Taken at RHS Harlow 17-08-11, the place was absolutely brimming over with insect activity, really brought the already impressive displays to life.

Are they like that because they are getting old? I saw one yesterday at a garden centre just like the one in the middle picture. I guessed it was because she was over worked and under paid.
