I don’t know if it protects artwork (and certainly has a slight colour to it) but if you’re looking to use bee products I’ve made up a polish/protector from raw linseed oil and beeswax a few times, and used it on various wood including some hive parts. Roughly 4 or 5 parts linseed oil to 1 beeswax by mass, and most advise melting the wax and pouring into cool linseed oil - high combustion risk if you heat the oil. It sets into a paste like polish, rub on and buff off with a cloth.

Needs to be well rubbed in to avoid leaving residue - this is where I have no experience over paint, as if there’s a risk of that dissolving or smearing the art then it might not suit.

Bodging is a skill I can assure you.
You could cover the painted ones with almost anything, spray fixative as suggested, clear lacquer spray for use on cars, hairspray even. Plus all the various more 'friendly' concoctions. Just think about possible reactions with the type of paint used. A spray product might be the easiest to apply.

I've used clear lacquer car spray on all sorts of metallic items including bare 'rusted' metal for garden/decorative items and wooden as well.Works fine.
