Best type for regular use (largely on plys of assorted thicknesses) please? My previous experiences have not been that great ....

Try to obtain hole saws specifically for timber . Most on offer are designed for cutting holes in metals and don't really suit cutting into timber as the 'set' and clearing arrangements are different .
You gets what you pays for :)

I think my current set are Draper and they are perfectly capable for ply.

Not so good on ply, but the old brace and bit reigned supreme for an age; still does the job. I still use one with an adjustable cutter, so no 'full set' of cutters required. Easy to sharpen, too.

A plunge router is as good as anything for cutting holes these days. Quick, clean cut, TCT cutters and all that. These 'hole saw cutters' have never really cut the mustard for me.

I think you'll find you are doing it wrong.... try a spoon. ;-)

Hi Susbees
I recently bought a set of Makita hole saws from Charlies (Shrewsbury) I had done some shopping around and they were very good value for the quality, would defiantly recommend a trip.:)

Starett.

Some of mine are 15 years old, have done tons of plasterboard, hardwood, softwood, ply. Never had a problem with any of them.

Thanks Sarah...and everyone else. Still work in progress (after the pile of unmade crown and dummy boards). Shame there's so much else to do!
