Certainly not convinced about that after poly hives comment that in a good year 50/60 hives would collect a ton of honey on the rape,i can get that quantity with a little over half that number of wooden hives,and moving the bees away a week early, in a bad year like last one. Do you think the quality of the bees could make a difference,Buckfasts.
 
2 supers per hive on a good OSR flow should not be too difficult. Maybe location and beekeeper are factors as well as strain of bee. I can easily miss the OSR by allowing the bees to expand as they might prefer in spring - the OSR might be gone before the hives are up to adequate forager strength to collect a decent surplus.
