What woods other than cedar do people use to make hives? I'm after a wood that is cheaper than cedar but stands up to the elements..

Thanks

Many people use pine or ply. I use marine ply, works quite well. Paint or treat though.

i use pine ply and cedar.if you use ply make sure you seal the edges with weather proof pva.cedar is cheap in the rough but then it takes months to air dry it and it will need to be planed to thickness before jointing.i used to wonder why cedar hives were so expensive until i started buying it rough cut.its a lot of work to get a nice hive.

Oak has been used. Probably other hardwoods as well.

Have a bit of a task to find anything better than cedar. Not many will stand up to the elements without surface treatment.

I make some of mine out of old scaffold boards, the others from pallet wood (whatever that happens to be). To weatherproof, I'm currently using polyurethane floor paint. They should last a lot longer in this world than I will.

But - if you want cheap wooden hives to last a really long time, either keep 'em under cover like the old skeppists used to do, or keep 'em inside a bee shed like many eastern europeans still do.
