It may be my imagination but it always seems like the guard bees which buzz my head (and sometimes sting) after they have been disturbed sound different to foraging bees that are just flying past. Higher pitched and more varying, the varying can be explained by the changing flight path, but not sure about the pitch/tone.
Anyone else noticed it or is it in my head?

Those who are positively aggressive do have a different buzz.

Water collecting bees are very similar. Always a higher pitched buzz.
