I find it strange that it should have got in the centre of a busy hive.

It may have flown in when you had the hive open some time. I saw a bumble fly into the top of the frames once, and it was dragged down into the hive immediately. I only just caught sight of it as I turned round. Poor bumble, didn't stand a chance!
 
I had exactly the same thing last year, assumed it was a bumble. Thought it might have been a queen looking for somewhere to overwinter.
