ok a better way to ask, are the bees friendly and calm on the comb?

One of the common traits of Buckfasts is that that they are very docile and easy to work with.

Spot on. The problems happen when you breed downstream of your original bought in queen and the offspring become more localised in their genes...The flow of new queens needs to be thought through as you need to replenish supply of decent queens. Few books cover any of this aspect thought.

When did you stop keeping Carniolans :)..
And how on Earth do you keep such exact records for each hive?

I find it impossible to do that and just do a rough production hive average...although I note the number of supers removed from each.

Sound like we are about to have mine's bigger than yours competition though..... Erica's in the lead with 8 supers on at the moment....
Any advance on 8?
Pictures as well please...and if we find its 4 supers with a clearer board and 4 supers above instant disqualification.

I will be back at the hives tomorrow , i will place a thin crown board above the supers..(so you can't see it) and stick my four empty supers above it..:spy:

My big hive had an empty drawn super, a super of foundation, and then they got the super I extracted back less than 2 weeks ago. All three of those supers were near finished and capped today.
The old girl has 6 frames of brood in a single brood box and they have filled and capped a super in 8 days as well as raising a fair few QCs.

My useless spring (which is likely my fault not the bees) is being put right by the Buckie’s now it seems.

.
You know better than that! I only have carnica.
I weighed them.

Yeah.... hence smiley.

Are you saying you weight your hives prior to extraction and then immediatley afterwards?
Means you are not clearing into empty supers. So you must do it all on the same day and cte bee compression?

Anyway i asked a question previously, is it wise to use top ventilation..if the hive is humming very loud..
I have replaced, for the duration of the hot weather. all the white blocks on my abelo BB's and supers and replaced with the ventilated black ones.

Its been amazing this year and a pleasant change. I can't see into the top of some of my hives also. What is a surprise is how many have bees fanning the entrance, something I never see in this part of the world. I have removed a few of the white blocks for vents on the 2 poly hives I bought this year but have several wooden hives fanning as well and they are all on open mesh floor and now vented under the roof which I usually never do.

For the first time ever I am dreading extracting....LOL

I weigh supers before and after extraction using luggage scales so have a hive by hive record of weight extracted... )and compare to actual totals - within 5% - allowing for extraction losses)

I'd like to see how you are going to clear that lot in one go :)
I extract as they fill, even when uncapped ....as long as refractometer tells me things are good to go...
Only 8 though? Must be some of HM's queens :)

have no idea. Never ever had that many on. In stages a couple at a time I suppose. Exmoor buckie granddaughter

I guess there won't be many bees in the very top supers so no need to add empty supers, just get clearer boards on, or brush off.
I'm currently finding the rhombus escapes are taking longer than 24 hours to clear supers in this heat.

Will have a look on Friday, take the refractometer with me and hopefully take some off. Ordered a super heaters trolley from Abelo.
I’ve been eying one for ages

Spending the profit before it's harvested :).

They are good, most effective with only a few supers. If you stack four or five the tops ones loose moisture much slower. With 2 and the thermostat in the middle I was reducing the water content in uncapped heather honey by 7% over night. You could see it shrinking.
Also doubles as a warming cabinet if you place a couple of poly brood boxes and a roof on it. Had mine up to around 45C to melt honey. Its also great for sticking heavy things on and being able to move them around.

Give/sell me a healthy Queen to try here.

There was nothing wrong with the one I sent you last year. I won't have anyone implying my queens aren't healthy!

If they're good enough for ITLD, they are good enough for anyone. Lets see how he rates them shall we?

I am not implying anything but the one you give me did expire for no reason, i was only messing about anyway as i am more than happy with these Danish Buckfast Queens..;)

You are implying there was something wrong with her by stressing "healthy". There was no need for that
We went through all this last year. It was a free queen which was surplus to my requirements and was just going to be squished (you only paid the p&p) which was laying wall to wall when I posted her to you. I can't account for what you did when she arrived.
Is this what I get for doing someone a favour?
