Just found my first queen wasp of this season. She was blundering about in my bathroom, having escaped from the loft. I can't remember seeing one this early. Makes me wonder what's going on up there?

Did you kill her cazza, or leave her be?

Pete that's appauling, you simply can't say things like that!

We had one in the kitchen this morning.

I think I would rather be an aye-aye than a wasp.

Wasps are important for the natural ecosystem because they catch zillions of tiny flying insects - Mother Nature's natural pesticide.

Maybe Bayer might one day do research in to how effective wasp colonies are at managing insect pests. But I doubt it. Their business is one of death.

I'm with MB on this by and large. Wasps do live on other pests being carnivores. Wasps are a pain in late summer though, and not just because of bees, they ruin my apples and other fruit if I don't take precautions.

I put her in a pile of dry leaves outside. Wasps are useful cleaners and tidiers so I feel bad if I dispatch them. However, I expect I will regret my actions when the inevitable nests appear in the garden and the darlings compete with me for my plums, invade my bee shed and pester the hives....

It feels easier to not kill queen wasps when they are nowhere near your hives.

Oh, I wouldn't stand for one close to my hives.

I suppose that makes me a NIMBY:)

Clearing my loft out the other year in the days before I put felt under the tiles. I found well over twenty. Everytime I moved a box one flew up. All where quickly dispatched. Didn't do any good still got a nest in the shed following year. Probably divine retribution.
