Hi all. It was a fine day yesterday in London so I took the opportunity to have one last inspection of my hive before winter hits.

I noticed in a few of the outermost frames there seemed to be nectar (or sugar syrup that has been fed) that has fermented and has a white mould on it. I'm pretty certain this is not on the brood or disease of the brood, but solely in small amounts in areas of stored syrup.

If this is the case is there anything I can (or should) do?as winter is upon us I'm worried that leaving fermenting sugar could cause fungal issues over winter?
Advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Is it white furry mold or is it just a white surface on the stores ?

I wouldn't worry too much. I think you will find it is where the bees have been unable to evaporate enough water off and the sugar has gone mouldy. That is why you should feed before the weather gets too cold! They will sort it out during the winter and if it is still there in the spring take the frames out. It won't affect capped stores

In addition to mbc, I would ask whether these frames have full cells or if they are only part-filled. When you say 'a few' what do you mean by that?

If the weather holds warm I would be positioning one or two of these frames to be capped off, if, indeed, they are not. Could it be capped and already crystallised ivy honey?

How strong is your colony? It may appear to be not as strong as it should (if frames have been abandoned uncapped). Would lt be better housed in a smaller space than it occupies now? A divider board to seal (at the top half at least) the colony to one side of the hive might be a consideration here.

Thinking sideways... and you are in tropical London.... is it wax moth cocoon.. that can look like a furry mold?
