One of the reasons why it's not a good idea to learn beekeeping from Youtube !!

:iagree:
Although i hear there's some cracking videos on there on how to make wasp traps :icon_204-2::icon_204-2:

So we're not the only country that has eejits leaving gaping holes in the crown board - and pennies under!!! dunno what the idea of the smorgasbord on the top was though. Gave up after a minute - it was dire 'how to destroy a colony in one easy lesson'!!

I lasted longer than you.. lol i got to around 5 minutes .. could it be Finman in disguise.. haha.

.
That was famous "full inspection of Christmas". Like he said at the end, should be enough room.

When I count foundations off, that colony had occupied only about one box in summer.
But it is an example, how to over winter 1 box colony in 3 boxes.

[Actually a splendid video to teach basics

If you have society meetings, these videos are good opportunity to discuss with beginners, what is right habit to nurse the hive case. Video is splendid. Only wise comment in video is the shout of wife: "What are you doing!"

We have discussed every week about these things in this forum. But guys are too proud to learn from old farts.

Perhaps this happens in Florida, but it suits perfectly into Finland. Nothing to do with climate.

a man tries hard, and does right things, but timing is badly wrong.

1 SPACE
It is winter and the hive has lots of vain space

- put the frames and bees into one box.
- some insulation onto inner cover , 5 cm something.

- in summer insulation protects the nest because steel cover becomes terribly hot, and insulation is against summer heat.

- lots of foundations.
- the hive has been too large even during summer, because colony was not able to draw foundations
- perhaps swarmed twice

2 FOOD STORES

- Food stores seems to be honey
- too much empty space eat stores, and heat escapes from nest. Hive does not give much protection.
- chimney effect

- Colony has had difficulties to develop. Perhaps uncontrolled swarming and bees have escaped.

- The hive has enough honey stores and no need to feed dry sugar. But it is American trick in wintering.

- Patty feeding is harmful because the colony should have winter rest
- patty is hard, and bees cannot eat it. It is luck to bees that they cannot.

- feeding happening keeps upstairs open and heat escapes from nest.

3 SKILL

- a man does not know basics.
- He does not know what he is doing
- he notices that there are too much space, but does not understand the meaning of that
- a man believes that bees stand what ever
. not much real interest to beekeeping and learning
. his hives are good quality

4 WEATHER
- cold and windy
- perhaps not much brood
- the man wanted to see the queen. That was the reason to open the hive.
.

5 WINTERING
- not a faintest idea how to over winter hives

Wonderful.
Can I copy/paste it as a reply to his video;)

You can watch him installing some packages of bees too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyMii32-ysg

It went well.

The hive on left had closed entrance and remain like that. Entrances too much open.
Beautiful hives.

But there is one problem in that hive floor type. When it rains, the floor may become a swimming pool.

Sun heats up the metal roof. Loft will be very hot. Insulation needed.

The colony starts better if you give 2 Langstroth boxes and 8 lbs bees. It starts at once foraging of surplus honey, and brooding gets a strong start.

No idea to protect upper body and put into danger the family happines tools.

Good reply Finman. Not only do you point out that it's a poor video for beginners to watch and learn from, but you tell them WHY. The sort of reply that IS useful on the beginners section. Sometimes, just pulling apart a post is simply just not enough and of no use.
Good job. :)
