Has anyone tried making their own show case for a frame of honey?

I think a few have over the years, I acquired four over the years, and come across others at honey shows

Personally the Thornes cases although expensive look the smartest tbh. I have seen plenty of homemade cases and none show a frame to it's best as none complement the aesthetically pleasing slightly of a well drawn and capped frame as the Thornes.

I'd beg to differ there, I have one beautifully crafted mahogany one which shows any frame off to its best, a Thornes one and another homemade one, again in hardwood and whilst there is nothing at all wrong with the Thornes one, no way does it show off the frames any better than the others

Yes, we had a few made to encourage new members to enter the frame class in our branch association. Quite easy and cheap to make tbh

I made one, I based it on the Thrones but used a router to put a slightly more decorative edge on the base. Not really sure it was worth the effort and time to be honest but it was satisfying to do my own.

I needed to borrow a case some years ago to show, thought it looked relatively straightforward woodwork (and with opportunities for improvement) so copied the basic design in some basically scrap wood, did it up with some routed edges and suchlike, and entered the case as a "beecraft item" where it won first prize, meanwhile the frame of honey (in the borrowed case) won nothing at all.

people tend to forget that the case is only there to display the frame and to keep wasps etc. out - it doesn't win you any points whatsoever during the judging.
Although it may lose you a few points if it's filthy or, in one show I was judging, one home made case had the lid tightly screwed down so I was unable to judge the frame

Yes, I wasn't expecting the case to lend anything to the exhibit, only pointing out that I made a case but the frames I had to offer weren't deserving (wasn't in the one I made anyway - though I have shown in my own one since). That said, a nice case with a frame (doesn't necessarily have to be show winning quality either) on a stall can be an attractive attention getter and conversation starter.

The nice mahogany case I have has a back story, I bought it at an auction and afterwards an old boy came up to be and told me his friend made it but had now passed away which is why it was, together with all his beekeeping kit, in the auction. He was a craftsman and it was a labour of love.
I was relating that story whilst setting up at Last year's disastrous Gower show. The3 squall hit the showground ten minutes after I left for home, and a few days later when I went to collect my entries after a few people were allowed back onto the field to secure everything I was told that immediately after the squall struck, someone witnessed a club member (who heard the story) rushing out of the carnage that was our marquee with my frame case clutched to her chest - she told me afterwards that as she ran out, she saw my case and just had to take it to safety.

When i entered a frame on my first show i didn't even know it should have been in a case. I felt a bit stupid and propped it up on the bench anyway.
It won first prize!
Just goes to show. (Excuse the pun!)
