This may be a silly question but i cant find an explanation anywhere. We are replacing our hive. Its a commercial and we were happy to go with another commercial. We bought a lovely cedar hive with supers frames and foundation at the same time. Weve put it all together and theres only 10 fames to each box leaving a 3inch gap! How many frames should a commercial take. Our old one which we started with was homemade from a chap and has 11 frames that fit nice n snug with correct spacing for bees. Is the way frames and hives sold the same con as a pack of 8 sausages but the hotdog buns are sold as 6. We have spare frames that is not the problem. We need to know how many to put in for the hive to be spaced correctly. My hubby suggested knocking up some dummy boards as a solution but not knowing is bugging me. Next step will be to swap old hive frames n all for new, were thinking of shook swarm as a nice opportunity to minimize varroa. But when and are we brave enough....

I would have thought it pretty obvious to google it for a start....

Also the clue is in the 3" gap.... needs a frame in there no?

Look hives take differing numbers of frames and said frames are as standard sold in 10's as is foundation. That is how it is, has been for as long as I have been doing it and no doubt will long after I am gone. It's not a con it is how they are packaged.

Ok poly hive. Understood. I just thought if you bought a hive with all the bits n bobs it would come with the right amount of frames. Im aware all types of hives have their own numbers, so had thought it reasonable that buying commercial frames and commercial foundations that they would come in the correct amount for a commercial hive. To me thats a no brainer.

My national deeps and shallows take 10 frames each, thus a standard pack is perfect :biggrinjester:

I use commercials. I use 11 and a thin dummy board at the end.

If you bought it as a "Commercial Hive Complete " package then yes I agree all the frames and foundation should be here and if that is the case shout the vendor and complain.

Thanks for all your comments. I shall be putting in 11 with a dummy and contacting supplier monday as we bought it all together. My hive has done well over winter and is bursting with bees. I was thinking that i would do a shook swarm to take advantage of starting off with new frames and foundation to help the varroa load. Do any of you have some advice on how to go about this. I was planning on picking a warm sunny day next week finding the queen and moving her into the new bb with qe under it to prevent escape. Shaking the lot into the bb and putting a super on with some spare frames of cspped honey i have frozen for emergencies. Would they benefit from a 1/1 feed as well?

That's why frame suppliers sell them in tens, because you will need to buy in more than one pack.

I have a couple of hundred firsts new commercial frames if anyone is interested.
I can do Manley or brood frames.

Yes admin just like hotdogs n buns. Never sold in the same quantity. Lol. Sny advice on the shook swarm anyone?

How many frames of brood are there?

What is intended for them?
