It varies.
Following on from the thread about the warm way or the cold way, is it acceptable practice to change a hive's direction from warm to cold or vice versa, or once started in one orientation, should we stick with it?

I have several hives that are 1 frame narrower than a National , they sit on a Nat floor but only the warm way , 90deg to the entrance . I change floors each Spring and sometimes they get a floor designed for the box and sometimes not .( I now buy floors and cut them down to suit) .
If the correct floor goes on they sit cold way . If not , warm . They dont seem to mind when changing orientation .

I do find that if they are warm way on any colony these are the ones to build a propolis curtain at the entrance to keep the wind out , not , as I would expect the cold way .
From a beekeeping point , I just dont like working frames from the back of the hive . I know it should'nt make any difference but it just feels odd to me !

The whole issue is humbug. It makes no sense.
The coldest thing is the mesh floor. Do something to it if you want your hives to be warmer.

When I transported hives to the field, I did not put e ntrance towars south because wind blows from that direction.

It did matter once upon a time but not now and changing the orientation of the combs is a matter for which way suits you the beekeeper to ease the working of the colony.

It matters not a hoot to the bees on OMF floors.
