I now have the Chinese refractometer. The calibration instructions that come with it are very confusing. I even have the special oil and 'plastic block' supplied by the manufacturer. Some plain simple instructions would be much appreciated.

It should hopefully be calibrated already so you can leave it alone.
As a precaution you should decant some olive oil into a small bottle, label and keep safe for future use. Take a reading, note it down and you have a standard to use should you feel the need to check.
If you must fiddle with it just type refractometer calibration into search and you will be entertained all day :)

Here's two to get you started

As above....please don't touch it.... I did and I regret it....just take a reading for the future using olive oil. Oh and can you send me some oil with your reading so that I can make sure mine is ok! Thanks

I get a reading of 26.5 per cent water using sainsburys 'light in colour' olive oil

Not sure that this is a very good sample though, probably quite variable. But as long as you keep a pot of the same oil for future reference

Oh NO not this again! I can't stand it, let me out of here!!!LOL

this calibration oil provided with the refractometer doesn't half stink. Don't know exactly what it is, but it sure is volatile and has given me a headache.

It should come calibrated. The oil with mine gives a reading of 19.6 and there is a mark there on the scale. If recalibation is needed or to check - small drop of oil on the glass plate, block goes shiny side down on top of the drop (beware it will slide all over the place) take reading. Twiddle the screw on top if you need to adjust -rare if you treat it right.
