Don't assume everyone is capable of basic carpentry jobs. In my woodwork class in the first year of secondary school we were expected to do three simple exercises involving sawing to length, planing and doing two types of joints. We couldn't move on to the next until we'd completed the previous one to the teacher's satisfaction. For the next two years we could do all sorts of projects. One fellow made himself an electric guitar.
At the end of the third year I was still trying to complete the third of the first year's exercises.
