Not a good advert for beekeepers was it - even when she was giggling away like a schoolgirl it seemed he had no idea what was so funny!

That and stating that honeybees "hibernate", although I guess its only us beeks who would know that was in fact the opposite of what happens.

Firstly they used "hibernate" to mean that the whole colony over winters unlike wasps etc.
Secondly - look up definition of hibernation. Doesn't mean total inactivity for whole winter. may only be for very short periods with active episodes in between. so again not completely incorrect.

Dr Smutson I presume?

Mind you I am indebted as you acted as our own copy of the TV times and allowed my 2 Hampshire to get their Kirsten Crafty fix.

All the best,
Sam

BTW you're missing the GBBO roundup on the beeb at the mo.

Definition of hibernate I always understood also included reduced metabolic rate so as to use up stored energy (fat) more slowly, something that honeybees dont do as far as I knew?

Honeybees may well indeed be inactive when it is very cold, but they are actually still awake throughout, so not technically "hibernated".

I did just check the definition, and with regards to animals it says "pass the winter in a dormant or torpid state".

I would therefore argue that honeybees do not hibernate!

I still dont think he was a good representation of a beekeeper, coming across as a stereotypical humourless beardy :)
