Hey Guys,

I am a beginner beekeeper. I have had a nuc of bees in a brood-box for about a month now. I think the hive is going ok, I don't think there is enough honey for them so i am feeding them sugar solution.

The problem i have is that i think the gaps between the national frames were too big to start with this means they have built wide wax comb and even more problematic they have started building wax comb over the original comb, like 2 layers of comb, making it impossible to see bottom layer of comb.

What can i do to get round this problem? Do i just leave it?

Cheers,

Felix

Are you using a different brood frame to the ones supplied with the nuc. If it's a National hive then there could be a mix of DN1(plastic spacers) and DN4(Hoffman). The frames are too far apart and the extra comb needs to be removed.

Yes .. just chop the comb back to the frame .. it will be a bit messy but best done sooner rather than later. Have a plastic box with a lid .. shake the bees off the comb as you cut it off and put it into the box with lid in place or they will be all over it. Sharp knife and your hive tool are your tools for the job.

Then make sure that the frames are properly spaced and the bees will sort the mess out that you leave them with.
