Apis ceranae and varroa.

Any ideas as to why Apis ceranae are able to coexist with varroa, whereas Apis mellifera succumb. I am guessing that perhaps they have a shorter brood cycle?

Exactly that. In Cerana they can only breed successfully in drone brood, so the infestation never reaches problem levels.

And they swarm very readily, taking only a very few phoretic mites to the new colony.

and doesn't A. ceranae have a tendency to entomb infested larvae, so that neither the bee nor the varroa emerge?
