I am looking to get restocked from a swarm after losing my colony this winter. Have any swarms been reported in the North of England?

You might have to join a queue of other Yorkshire beekeepers who want something for nothing ! Are you on the council list and the BBKA swarm collectors list? Inform your local secretary that you are in need of bees. There have only been a few swarms reported in the county so far but you will not have to wait long as colonies are starting to produce swarm cells.

I have not received any calls so far and not heard of any swarms yet.

Judging from my best colonies I would estimate it could be 1-2 weeks before any swarms appear and then dependent on the every changing weather!

The long rang forecast I have looked at changes almost daily! The other day it forecast the next warm period (18 degs +) from 1st June now it says from 5th June!

No Yorkshire person is going to put adverts in shop windows.

They have to pay for them...

well as a Yorkshire person I am deeply offended :icon_204-2: by the suggestion that a Yorkshire man would even contemplate accepting reverse charge calls. :nono:

I have a few colleagues from Yorkshire. One of them in particular (we worked alongside each other for years) had perfected 'being careful' into an art form.
Years ago i noticed he was a bit distracted and thoughtful - it transpired that his mother had been offered 'the right to buy' her council house for a ridiculously small price, knowing of his deep and longstanding love of money I pointed out to him that if he bought it, it would be a fantastic investment, and as an aside she could live the rest of her life (she was in her eighties by this time) in the comfort of the thought she was secure in a home they couldn't take from her. 'I know that' he said glumly (but then is there any other way for a tyke?) 'but what if she falls behind in the rent?'.......!!
When we worked in Holland all the rest of the crew bought their wifes diamonds back from Amsterdam - he bought a hoover in a closing down sale.

Another possible source of swarms is getting in with some local pest controllers, I have one who provides me with the chance of getting a swarm at least once a year.

I found a couple of photos of swarms and made up some A4 posters with my mobile number then left copies in our village hall and post office me being public spirited and all that. Now I just need some favourable conditions and a lot of luck.

How much are you going to pay them for these swarms you hope to collect?
It is Yorkshire you know, and once they find out that bees are at a premium........................:troll::D

The Yorkshireman - like the Scot, but without the generosity of spirit.
And those women in "Last of the Summer Wine" were drawn from life - take my wife....

Seriously though, I have been collecting swarms for 4 years and only once was someone talking about how much the bees may be worth!
In the majority of cases people are very grateful that someone will come, usually short notice, and remove a swarm from their property.

It is also a great chance to educate people about bees and their needs etc.

btw the person who was trying to find out from me how much I made from bees (and therefore how much the swarm was worth) was a builder who lived in a nice big house and called me out on a Bank Holiday and begrudgingly gave me a contribution towards my petrol!

In most cases I have had people in council houses and OAPs try to insist in giving me money for my services!

Yes I am a Yorkshireman but do not charge for my services and just ask for a contribution towards petrol costs!

The swarms will come soon enough and when they do they will probably all come at once!

Bait your existing hive/s and see if one comes to you. Place bait hives in friends and relatives gardens too.

What is the best thing to bait hives with?
