I wonder if somebody could give me some advice regarding moving hives, it’s my 1st year of beekeeping.

I have 3 hives, one is a swarm that is in a 8 frame nuc, I want to move this into a hive and move it about 3ft and move the other 2 hives about a foot along, so they are in a row. How is the best way to do this as I don’t want to confuse the bees !

Thanks in advance for any advice

If you move a hive less than three feet the bees will find their way back to it - they recognise the pheremones emitted from their colony and this along with visual recognition will lead them back to the correct box.

Transfer the Nuc to the new hive on the same spot where the nuc is now, give them a day or two to get themselves sorted and then move the hive gradually a foot a day to where you want it to be. You can move the other two hives a foot withoiut unduly confusing the bees but, if they are close together, then I would only move them one at a time.

Read my blog on this site. It gives you quite a few pointers!
